The History Behind The Arch |
||
The great west and the westward expansion from the Mississippi River are forever in the history books. Lewis and Clark are two of countless explorers who ventured westward in the 1800's. Around 1935, the Saint Louis riverfront was chosen to commemorate the U.S. expansion in the nineteenth century. All work ceased because of WWII until 1947, when the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Association had a design competition for the memorial. Eero Saarinen's design of an arch was selected over several other designs. It's unique design, appearance (stainless steel) and its structural engineering best defined the history of our great nation, as well as our future. |
